Las avenidas torrenciales son fenómenos hidrometeorológicos constituidos por un escurrimiento superficial de respuesta rápida que, según el caudal y la velocidad, determina el grado de afectación al sistema expuesto. En la dimensión social, los sistemas con mayores dificultades para anticiparse, responder o resistir son aquellos individuos o grupos en condiciones vulnerables. Al respecto, en la periferia de la ciudad de Querétaro, destaca la microcuenca Menchaca donde personas con evidentes desventajas socioeconómicas se asentaron en sitios susceptibles, sin tener conocimiento de ello, por lo que han sufrido daños y pérdidas materiales y humanas. El presente estudio tiene como objetivo identificar la vulnerabilidad ante la ocurrencia de avenidas torrenciales en una unidad de escurrimiento de la microcuenca Menchaca. Los métodos y herramientas utilizados consistieron en pláticas informales, encuestas, recorridos de campo y cartografía. Entre los hallazgos, la precipitación y la pendiente son condicionantes de avenidas torrenciales; pero esos fenómenos están supeditados por las modificaciones del lugar, las condiciones de los habitantes y por la limitada y permisible intervención de las autoridades.

Torrential floods are hydrometeorological phenomena constituted by a rapid response surface runoff that, according to the flow and speed, determines the degree of affectation to the exposed system. In the social dimension, the systems with the greatest difficulties in anticipating, responding or resisting are those individuals or groups of vulnerable conditions. In this regard, In this regard, in the periphery of the city of Querétaro, the Menchaca microwatershed stands out, where people with obvious socioeconomic disadvantages settled on susceptible sites, without having knowledge of it, for what have been the damages and the material and human losses. The aim of this study is to identify the vulnerability to the occurrence of torrential floods in a runoff unit of the Menchaca microwatershed. The methods and tools used were informal talks, surveys, field trips and cartography. Among the findings, precipitation and slope are conditions of torrential avenues; but these phenomena are subject to changes in the place, the conditions of the inhabitants and the limited and permissible intervention of the authorities.
